Petition to East Gippsland Shire Council - Restore the Iconic Lakes Entrance View

We, the undersigned residents, ratepayers, business owners, and visitors to Lakes Entrance, respectfully petition East Gippsland Shire Council to take action to restore and protect the iconic panoramic view from Jemmy’s Point to the North Arm bridge.

Lakes Entrance is renowned for its breathtaking vista over Bass Strait, the Entrance channel, and the Gippsland Lakes; a view that has been enjoyed for generations and is a much-loved symbol of our town. This view is the first impression many travellers experience as they arrive, and it remains one of the most photographed and promoted landmarks in our region.

Over recent years, thick scrub and unmanaged vegetation have grown to a height that now obscures much of this world-class view. With the recent upgrades to the footpath and improvements to the surrounding area, now is the ideal time to complete this work and allow the natural landscape to shine.

We request that Council undertake targeted vegetation management along the descent into Lakes Entrance from Jemmy’s Point, specifically trimming and clearing shrub growth to below the handrail, while retaining appropriate trees and ensuring all works adhere to environmental and safety requirements.

Restoring this view will:
• Re-open one of Victoria’s most spectacular coastal vistas
• Enhance the visual entrance into Lakes Entrance for locals and visitors
• Support tourism, local pride, and the identity of our town
• Complement recent pathway and roadside improvements
• Deliver a simple, low-cost enhancement with significant community benefit

We believe this action will make a meaningful and immediate improvement to the presentation of Lakes Entrance, reinforcing its standing as the gateway to the Gippsland Lakes and one of Australia’s most beautiful coastal destinations.

We respectfully ask East Gippsland Shire Council to prioritise this vegetation management and work with the community to ensure the view when entering Lakes Entrance remains a defining feature of our region for years to come.
